Facts about Lake Patton
Here are some interesting facts* about Lake Patton
- Lake Patton is one of two large human-made lakes on the SCC campus
- Lake Patton is the home of hundreds of migrant birds throughout the year, including Canada geese, several types of ducks, herons, and other shore birds (any pink flamingos seen at the lake are temporary plastic decoys illegally placed by flamingo poachers from south St. Louis)
- Although never officially stocked, human and nonhuman friends of the lake have deposited fish and eggs over the years so that the lake is now populated by various types of fish. The flamingos, er, I mean herons love it!
- The bench on Lake Patton is dedicated to the memory of Paul Schnare, member of the founding team of the college and late husband of my friend Helen Schnare
- The south end of Lake Patton is also known as Blumer Shoals (not to be confused with Bull Shoals, which is in a different county entirely)
- Reports of a lake monster living in Lake Patton have never been substantiated
- The path around Lake Patton is also known as Pittman Path (not to be confused with Pitman Hill Road, which lies just to the south of SCC as serves as the southward continuation of Mid Rivers Mall Drive towards the KATY Trail)
- The college's master plan does not even mention the freshwater dolphin habitat rumored to be slated for Lake Patton when a Science Building is FINALLY constructed
- Lake Patton was never officially named that, but has come to be known by that name to folks from Ireland to Africa, from France to Fanning, MO. (but, alas, to very few from St. Charles County, MO)
- Australia has never had a winning yacht team in any race on Lake Patton
- There are no posted signs specifically prohibiting skinny-dipping in Lake Patton (however, swimming IS prohibited—presumably one could legally wade, however)
