What to expect in your field course . . .

Field courses run by Dr. Kevin Patton of the SCC Science Department are part of a Study Tour program of travel to a destination outside of (often FAR outside of) the local St. Charles County community.

Study tours are mostly about fun, but in the context of learning and exploring.  They do not usually involve formal lectures or field experiments but are instead exploratory surveys of extraordinary habitats and the wildlife that inhabits them.

Course requirements . . .

First, you have to have Dr. Patton's permission to enter the course.  That's so he has a chance to briefly discuss with you what the course is about, any prerequisites for the course, and how many credit hours you will be attempting, that's all.

Second, once you have enrolled, you will consult with Dr. Patton to outline a learning agreement that contains your course objectives, how you plan to meet the objectives, and how your learning will be evaluated.

The learning agreement is simple and straightforward and is tailored to your needs and interests.  Usually, students meet their objectives by some combination of journals, photo essays, term papers, readings, and films.  But the courses are flexible . . . so you have a lot of options, depending on your objectives and your personal learning style.
